Compared to memories requiring generative recall, directly retrieved autobiographical memories manifested faster retrieval, less cognitive effort, greater recency, higher frequency of rehearsal, enhanced vividness, and more positive emotional valence. A significant finding was the greater ability of younger adults to recall autobiographical memories that were prompted or generated, in contrast to older adults, who demonstrated no difference in their ability to retrieve directly recalled memories. The parallel-form reliability of the word-cue method in producing autobiographical memories was assessed by comparing two sets of word cues. The results yield novel understanding of how retrieval type and the aging process independently affect autobiographical memories.
